Transformers ROTF Leader Optimus Prime
Name: Optimus Prime (Autobot)
Series: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen (Leader class)
Price: Rs 2000
Prime has been a favourite of mine ever since I saw him in the movie (TFTM), but it wasn’t until ROTF that I knew about the toys (Haven’t watched any of the cartoons thanks to being in India). For a long time, I was debating with The Girlfriend over which Prime to get, the then voyager class Prime (which was a mould of the previous movie) or the leader class… Voyager had 2 guns going for it, while leader had the price going against it. I had all but opted for the voyager when The Girlfriend saw the front of the truck as the backpack in the voyager mould… that was a no-go for her. Around the same time, we managed to find leader class at a 10% discount at a store… It didn’t cushion the blow to the wallet much, but at least I felt a little good about the deal 😀
Prime comes packagedin bot mode, but we begin here with the alt mode. He’s massive compared to anything I have. The gears in the truck mode in the windows (which are clear) are the biggest let-down in this form, considering that the then voyager didn’t have it, plus it had a ‘holographic driver’ that disappeared when you opened the door, so that was a big fail for this mode.
As with most, if not all transformers, robot parts on the underbelly reveal there’s more to this truck (of course, the gears in the cab don’t help when its straight up too). There’s plenty of details around, especially the grille, which is a cause for worry once you’ve done the transformation. And of course, the nicely detailed wheels…
For a long time, this was the most complicated transformer transformation I had done, that was until the WFC Optimus Prime came along. Getting him to robot mode is a snap… getting him from robot mode to truck is a pain, mostly because of aligning panels. Mid transformation, you can get to the secret 3rd form… Stiltwalker Prime (j/k)
This is how Prime looks when you get him out of the box. His blades are spring loaded, but since they don’t look too concealled in the ‘off’ mode, I keep them in the deployed mode. A big ‘sore’ point to this version of Prime is the ‘sore’ (read red) ‘toe’. Given his size, most of his joints are ‘ratcheting’ joints. This is both good and bad… Good since he’s quite stable and won’t lose his ‘pose’ easily; bad because it can be quite frustrating getting a pose right because the ‘spread’ / articulation you want is right in the middle of 2 ‘clicks’ of the joint…
The leader class Prime does not have light-piping, but he does feature some electronics, namely the light-up eyes… Here’s his eyes lit up and not.
The leader class beat the crap out of the old voyager, but the new battle blades voyager has quite a lot going for it. However, being a Prime fan, I like this size 🙂 A minor grouch that I have with both the new voyager and the current leader class is that the front grille becomes the soles of the feet, which means I’d have to think twice before I make him stand anywhere, afterall, I don’t want scratches or dings ruining the front grille. There’s a new ‘battle damaged battle hooks’ Prime, but I still prefer this version. There’s also the chromed out Buster Prime but that’s way out of the budget, it not availability for me… This Prime stands the tallest in my collection right now 😀
